The 2020/21 Formula E season is now over and it’s safe to safe it was a chaotic one! It was perhaps one of the most unpredictable and open world championships we’ve seen in modern times. Laura Leslie takes you through some of the big numbers below.

99 – That’s how many points new world champion Nyck de Vries finished the season on. In Formula E’s seven seasons so far that is the lowest winning total for a champion and marks the first time the champion has scored less than 100 points on the way to the title. De Vries won by just 7 points from Edoardo Mortara and only had a 10 point gap between himself and Robin Frijns in 5th place.

11 – We saw 11 different drivers win a race and set a pole position in 2020/21. No driver would score more than 2 race victories – the 4 double winners being Jake Dennis, Lucas Di Grassi, De Vries and Sam Bird. Only 1 driver would secure a hat-trick of poles – Stoffel Vandoorne. 11 different winning drivers and pole sitters in a single season is a new record for Formula E.

20 – Of the 25 drivers who started a race in the 2020/21 season, an incredible 20 ended up with at least 1 podium finish by the end of the year. That’s a whopping 80% of the grid tasting champagne at some stage! Mitch Evans sipped the bubbles most frequently – 5 podium appearances and all in 3rd place.

0 – Perhaps one of the most surprising statistics of the year was that 2015/16 champion Sebastian Buemi would fail not only to win a race, but also stand on the podium at all. Buemi endured a torrid season and only scored points in 3 races to finish a disappointing 21st in the championship. Buemi’s best race finish was a 5th place in the 1st Rome ePrix.

2 – The number of points champion De Vries scored in a 6 race run mid-season. Only Sergio Sette Camara, Oliver Turvey and Tom Blomqvist endured worst streaks throughout the season and those drivers would finish in 22nd, 23rd and 24th in the championship respectively.

13 – The number of cars disqualified throughout the season, a new record for Formula E. In comparison Formula One has had just 11 disqualifications in the past 11 seasons. In 2020/21 Formula E was averaging a disqualification every 0.8 races. Nissan e.dams felt the wrath of the stewards most often with 5 total disqualifications, including 2 double DSQs in Puebla and London.

4 – The number of drivers who scored their maiden wins in 2020/21 - De Vries, Dennis, Alex Lynn and Norman Nato. For both Dennis and Nato this was their debut season in the series and indeed Dennis would go on to win 2 races and become the equal best performing rookie in the series history by the end of the season – 3rd in the championship just like Felix Rosenqvist back in 2016/17.
